There are four galleries for you to "stroll" through. The Recent Work gallery showcases my most recent pieces. Gallery A showcases my boat paintings. The subject matter in these paintings are the working boats of Freeport and Portland, ME. Gallery B chronologically exhibits selected paintings. The time period is from approximately 1979 when I was in high school to the present. Information about each painting, including exhibitions and awards, is listed. The majority of the paintings are in acrylic and watercolor, my two favorite media. Gallery C showcases pieces exhibited in a duo show called "Along the Waterfront" held at Seebeck Gallery in Kenosha, WI in 2001. The subject matter in these pieces is buildings and scenes along the waterfront in Kenosha and Racine, WI.
I like the challenge and risk involved with painting in acrylic and watercolor. I also like their fast pace. I am particularly attracted to acrylic on paper for its high risk factor. With watercolor, while the paint is transparent and mistakes show, you do have the ability to re-soak the sheet to remove the paint, provided the colors used are non-staining. Acrylic does not give the artist that option. Transparent acrylic on paper is very difficult and totally unforgiving. There is no way to hide any mistakes so the artist must always be aware of what he or she is doing and must know the nature of the materials, methods and colors being used.
Regarding subject matter... I would say that, while my subjects appear to be rather diverse, the real subject in my paintings is light. The way light reacts with and flows in my paintings is very important. I love high contrast realism. Another aspect of my work is my desire to make the viewer see something that may be taken for granted on a daily basis in a new way . I love to focus on vignettes and direct the vision rather than to paint generalized scenes common to the eye and to other artists.
